ACCURACY
How we calculate the night sky
Every star map is calculated to order, not picked from a set of ready-made images. Your date, time and location run through the same astronomical calculation professional planetarium software uses.
We work from the HYG star catalogue, a merge of the Hipparcos, Yale Bright Star and Gliese catalogues. From it we plot every star down to magnitude 6.5 — the limit of what the human eye can see on a dark night. The sky on your poster is the sky you could actually have seen.
Star positions are converted using the IAU 1982 sidereal time formula and then projected stereographically, the same projection used on real star charts. We verified the output against NASA JPL Horizons data.
